A275 George III St Giles Gainsborough Chair

A carved mahogany Gainsborough chair, closely based on the chairs in the celebrated suite of furniture made for the Earls of Shaftesbury at St Giles' House, Dorset, in the middle of the 18th century. This model of chair, with its profuse naturalistic foliate and floral carving, is testament to the carvers skill, and to the original designers feel for the restrained rococo taste in England in the period circa 1755-1765.
